VOLUNTEER WITH US
Volunteers are an integral part of Derby Refugee Forum and we have a friendly team who support and help with all the services that we offer. Our main volunteering days are Tuesday and Thursday each week and some of our volunteer roles can be seen below.
As we are a small organisation, we are not able to offer all volunteer roles at all times. However, If you feel that you would be interested in helping, please contact us for, or download an application form using the button below.

Derby Refugee Forum is a volunteer run charity organisation supporting refugee and asylum seekers in the community.
The aims of the forum are to:

Assist refugees and asylum seekers to adapt to life within their new community in particular by providing advice and practical assistance, mainly achieved through our a drop in advice service.

Liaise with other organisations that can help fulfil such purposes and to advance the education of the public in general about issues concerning refugees and those seeking asylum.
Volunteering Opportunities will mostly take place at the Bosnia Herzegovina Association, 99 Curzon Street, Derby, DE1 1LN.
VOLUNTEER ROLES

VOLUNTEER ADVISOR
Role Description
-
Working closely with service users on a 1:1 basis or with an interpreter to resolve issues and find the information they need to solve their problems or sign post to other organisations that may be able to help.

Provide information and advice to service users on wide range of issues, and help with for example, asylum support issues, finding local services information for people, solving problems with bills.

Contact agencies on clients’ behalf, by phone, email and letter.

Maintain confidentiality

Understand and adhere to all policies and procedures.
This role will require a DBS check.
Skills needed
Welcoming attitude.
Basic IT skills.
Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
Able to think through a problem to achieve a positive outcome.
Flexibility to work on different projects and areas in the Centre as needed.
A second language may be an advantage.
Training on current asylum support issues will be given.
Volunteer Commitment
Due to the ever changing procedures set outside the Centre, a regular commitment is needed for this role. We would envisage that the volunteer can attend on a weekly basis, either Tuesday or Thursday for either a full or half day, between 9.45am and 4.30pm at the Bosnian & Herzegovina Community Centre.
VOLUNTEER INTERPRETER
Role Description

Assisting Volunteer Advisors with interpretation during drop in advice sessions.

Helping to interpret during workshops and activities.

Translating documents and posters for use within the Centre.

Helping service users with basic information, serving refreshments in the kitchen and helping with food distribution.

Maintain confidentiality

Understand and adhere to all policies and procedures.
This role will require a DBS check.
Skills needed
Welcoming attitude.
Basic IT skills.
Good communication skills written and verbal needed.
Competent English speaker and at least 1 other required language (e.g. Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi)
Knowledge of food hygiene and serving refreshments in a kitchen environment
Flexibility to work on different projects and areas in the Centre as needed.
Training on current asylum support issues will be given.
Volunteer Commitment
A regular commitment is needed for this role so we can ensure that we have interpreters available for particular languages on a regular basis. We would envisage that the volunteer can attend on a weekly basis, either Tuesday or Thursday for either a full or half day, between 9.45am and 4.30pm at the Bosnian & Herzegovina Community Centre.

VOLUNTEER ADMIN ASSISTANT
Role Description
Assist the centre by helping to co-ordinate collection of and dissemination of information to advice workers,
Update and organise templates and forms, data inputting, filing, produce publicity about the service
Organise and maintain our paper and electronic filing systems in an effective way so that information can be found with ease.
Keep records up to date
Register new volunteers ensure forms are filled out correctly.
Other related tasks, such as producing reports and doing mailings.
Maintain confidentiality
Understand and adhere to all policies and procedures.
Skills Needed.
Welcoming attitude
IT skills essential.
Experience of administration systems / office systems.
Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
Experience of producing publicity material and updating a website would be an advantage.
Flexibility to work on different projects and areas in the Centre as needed.

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT
Role Description

Serve refreshments in the kitchen.

Help organise the downstairs space for activities and workshops

Help with and or organise activities held both in the Centre and outside.

Keep the Centre clean and tidy at all times.

Knowledge of food hygiene and serving refreshments in a kitchen environment
Flexibility to work on different projects and areas in the Centre as needed.

Volunteer Commitment
A regular commitment is needed for this role so we can ensure that the kitchen is supervised at all times during our opening hours. We would envisage that the volunteer can attend on a weekly basis, at least Tuesday or Thursday for either a full or half day, between 9.45am and 4.30pm at the Bosnian & Herzegovina Community Centre.
